All about Charlestown Walking Tours

From Polmear to the present day - duration 2 hours.

My name is Lyndon Allen and I come from two of Charlestown's historical families.  I am a passionate Charlestown historian. I was also a commercial fisherman from the port for 36 years. My grandfather was a harbour master and his father was a famous master mariner, both from Charlestown.  I have written two books about its colorful past entitled Charlestown - Time and Tide  ( A History of Charlestown) and Charlestown-Batten down the Hatches (Winds of change),  both available to buy here. Charlestown is a subject I've researched for over 40 years.

So come, take a walk with me, and step back through time to the very beginnings of the fishing hamlet of Polmear. Learn about Charles Rashleigh who built the port from whom the village got its name. I will talk about some of the characters that have made Charlestown what it is today. Also discussing topics such as the Great Charlestown Road, the china clay industry from pit to port, the ports pilots, shipping, mining, the port leat and ponds, St Paul's church, and much, much more. A lady said to me once after a tour, that she felt like she had been wrapped in a blanket of history!

My mission is to show a different side of Charlestown to my clients and to help them gain a better and deeper understanding of the village and its original inhabitants. I would like very much to tell you all about its glorious past and I look forward to meeting you all in the near future.
