All About Charlestown walking tours
Author/ Historian, Retired Commercial Fisherman.
My name is Lyndon Allen and I am an eighth generation descendent of one of Charlestown's original families. My family came up from Veryan to build the port we see today. The family then morphed into coastguards, pilots, and seamen, all at Charlestown. I am a passionate Charlestown historian. I was a commercial fisherman from the port itself for 36 years. My grandfather was harbour master and his father was a master mariner, both at Charlestown. Very recently I have written a book about its intriguing past entitled Charlestown - Time and Tide ( A History of Charlestown). Its a subject I've researched for over 40 years.
So come walk with me and step back through time to the very beginnings of the fishing hamlet of Polmear. Learn about Charles Rashleigh who built the port from whom the village got its name. I will talk in great depth on subjects such as the church, the Great Charlestown Road, the Napoleonic Gun Battery, the pilots, shipping, filming etc and much, much more.
My mission is to show a different side of Charlestown to my clients, and to help them gain a better and deeper understanding of the village and its original inhabitants. I would like very much to tell all about its glorious past and I look forward to meeting you all in the near future.
The meeting place for all tours will be at the church gate on Church Road, finishing in the outer harbour area. Tours are twice daily at 10.30am and 2pm and last 1 hour 30 minutes. Please book early to avoid disappointment.
