My name is Lyndon Allen, and my connection with Charlestown goes back nine generations. I come from two of the village’s historic families and have traced my ancestry back to the 18th century. One of my ancestors was Ralph Allen, founder of the Postal Service.

Charlestown’s maritime history is also part of my own family story. I spent 36 years working in the port; my grandfather was a harbour master, and his father was a well-known master mariner who sailed from Charlestown.

I have spent more than 40 years researching Charlestown and its remarkable past. I am also the author of two books, Charlestown – Time and Tide: A History of Charlestown and Charlestown Through the Hatches: Winds of Change.

I was recently honoured to receive a Gorsedh Kernow Award for services to the community in recognition of my contribution to Cornish history, heritage and culture.

Join me for a walk through more than two centuries of Charlestown’s history, beginning with the fishing hamlet of Polmear and the vision of Charles Rashleigh, who developed the harbour and gave Charlestown its name.

Along the way, I’ll introduce you to some of the fascinating characters who shaped the village and explore subjects including the Great Charlestown Road, the china clay industry from pit to port, the harbour pilchard industry, mining, local places of worship and much more. There is always another story to tell — and often another little piece of history waiting to be discovered.

My aim is to show visitors a different side of Charlestown: not simply the beautiful harbour we see today, but the people, industries and events that created it. I hope you’ll join me to discover its extraordinary past and gain a deeper understanding of this unique Cornish village.
